National Arts in Education Week celebrates the value of the arts in our schools and classrooms. #BecauseOfArtsEd, our students often have the opportunity to participate in arts-inspired events and showcases at the regional, state, and national levels. Here’s to Mia Vigil and Love Jones, who earned Positive Principal Referrals for showing compassion and kindness to a student who was struggling in class. Both girls encouraged and supported the student, providing words of advice and offering to help him tackle the assignment. What a wonderful example for everyone at SJES! So proud of you both! 🙌🏼

Mrs. Sunday’s 4th grade class used the STEAM lab today to practice using the engineering process to solve a problem. Sounds like fun and judging by these smiles, I’d say it was! Problem: Make a way to hold a water bottle for easy drinking without holding on to it. Awesome! 👏🏼🎉

With temperatures expected this week to reach the mid to upper 90’s, we are taking proactive steps to prevent heat-related illnesses. That means limiting outdoor activities at elementary, middle, and high schools when a heat advisory or warning is in place for Jefferson County. Limitations apply to any physical education classes, outdoor classrooms, field trips, and recess activities. For athletics, we will follow WVSSAC guidelines and consult with certified athletic trainers and medical doctors before making a final decision about practice or games. Current guidelines include safety measures such as practicing without pads, eliminating conditioning activities, moving indoors, or limiting practice time. We recognize the importance of providing appropriate practice time and games and will do what we can to ensure our student-athletes can prepare and compete safely. Schedule changes will be communicated as quickly as possible to limit potential disruption to students and families. We appreciate your support of our students.

A reminder that Jefferson County Schools will be closed on Monday, September 4, in observance of Labor Day. We hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend!
Mrs. Burwell's 4th grade class had fun in the STEAM lab today, learning to problem solve and work as a team. The students had to use engineering and planning to stack 24 cups and construct a successful tower. They discussed as a group whether their tower was successful or not, things they could have done differently, and materials that they would have liked to use if they were doing this activity again in the future. Creative teamwork for the win!
Who wouldn't want to own a Tyson Bagent autographed football?? Tyson was a record-breaking quarterback at Shepherd University and is creating a sensation in the NFL, currently battling for a QB2 spot on the Chicago Bears. Riley Thomas was THRILLED to win the football! Congrats, Riley, and Go, Tyson! Your hometown is cheering you on!
A big shout out to third-grader, Benjamin Keysor, the latest recipient of a Positive Principal Referral. Ben was working in class and a fellow classmate dropped everything on the floor. Ben came to the rescue, without hesitation, and helped with everything—including picking up every single crayon. That’s the kind of friend we all need! Way to be a kind and helpful role model, Ben!
